Did you know the Fentimans’ story began over 100 years ago?
The story began when Thomas Fentiman, an iron puddler from West Yorkshire, made a loan to a fellow tradesman. In return, for security, he received a recipe for botanically brewed ginger beer.
As the loan was never repaid, Thomas became the owner of the unique recipe and in 1905 he began making ginger beer.
Using botanical brewing methods, the time-honoured technique uses a combination of infusion, skilful blending and fermentation of natural ingredients using no artificial sweeteners, flavourings or preservatives.
Selling the ginger beer in handmade stone jars, allowing the drink to settle for one week, the jars were stamped with an image of Thomas Fentimans’ pet Fearless who was a Crufts’ award-winning dog.
Delivering the stone jars door-to-door, the ginger beer quickly became very popular and the family business grew, with several brewing facilities opening in the north of England to keep up with demand.
Adapting to meet the demands of the modern world, Fentimans adapted its technique and swapped its stone jars for glass bottles, now adorned with Fearless’ face on the label, as the bottles began to sell in shops, bars and restaurants.
Since 1985, Thomas’ Fentimans great grandson Eldon Robson continued to produce the ginger beer using the same botanical brewing process, passing on this knowledge and expertise from generation to generation throughout the Fentimans’ family.
Thanks to innovations, the Fentimans range has vastly expanded from its ginger beer beginnings, now boasting a diverse range almost 20 products including flavoured soft drinks and a range of 100% natural flavoured mixers for gin, vodka, rum, whisky and other spirits.
